Cake and Ice Cream Bon Bons

These cake and ice cream bon bons are the ideal cool summer treat, with cake on one side, ice cream on the other, and buttercream in the center.

I like cake and ice cream just like everyone else. Okay, let me explain. I think I enjoy cake more than the average person. However, cake and ice cream together? That is just a marriage made in heaven.

But I couldn’t simply create any old ice cream cake. No, I had to go all out for you, so I made these cake and ice cream bon bons. It’s the ideal marriage of cake, ice cream, and even buttercream.

What makes them so unique? They’re bite-sized, after all, and everything bite-sized is adorable, right? One side is ice cream, the other is cake (really a cake pop batter), and they’re joined together with buttercream. Doesn’t it sound good?

I won’t lie, they take some effort to prepare, but they’re a delicious treat to offer. You get cake, ice cream, and icing all in one mouthful! The wonderful part is that you can make them whatever color you want or leave them as is. I wanted my cake balls and buttercream to have a teal tint, so I added blue food coloring to them. It seemed to go well with the birthday cake ice cream I used, which already had sprinkles in it.

These are such a delicious summer treat. Work in the yard for a few hours in the 100-degree heat, then come in and grab one (or five) of these tiny babies and you’ll forget how hot and weary you were.

These would be perfect for a pool party, in my opinion. There are no bowls for people to dirty up. They may just take one and go. Now I simply need to locate someone who has a pool I can borrow.

Supplies you’ll need to make the cake and ice cream bon bons:

Crumbled cake (you can make it simple on yourself by using a box mix, or if you want to go all out, here’s my finest scratch vanilla cake recipe: Cake with Vanilla Beans)

Vanilla ice cream (I used Blue Bell Birthday Cake ice cream since we adore Blue Bell in Texas.)

Buttercream (You won’t need much buttercream, so don’t make two batches unless you want an excuse to devour the leftovers. When you prepare it, though, you must use full butter rather than shortening since shortening will not firm up sufficiently in the freezer.) Here’s one of my favorites: Buttercream with Vanilla Beans

Small silicone sphere mold These are rather affordable, so if you have two of them, you can create a lot of bon bons at once.

Making the cake and ice cream bon bons:

(There’s a video towards the end of the page that shows all of the processes for putting these together.)

Begin with the cake side. Simply take some cake crumbs and mix them with some buttercream. It doesn’t take a lot of buttercream.

A nice ratio to use is two cups crushed cake to a few tablespoons buttercream. I started with blue-tinted buttercream and then added additional color. You are not required to color your buttercream.

Mix your cake pop mixture well, then spoon it into one half of the silicone mold. Place it in the freezer for approximately 20 minutes.

Remove from the freezer and fill the mold with ice cream on the opposite side. Work quickly and avoid licking your fingers. You’ll need to clean it up a little before putting it in the freezer.Things get disorganized.

Chill for around 15 to 20 minutes before removing from the freezer. Spread some buttercream on top of the ice cream.

Remove the cake pop side, add a little amount of buttercream, and then connect it to the ice cream side.

Return to the freezer for at least an hour. They won’t come out in one piece if you don’t wait approximately an hour.

After an hour, just remove them from the freezer and remove them from the molds. That’s all there is to it! Aren’t they adorable?

Serve immediately or cover and freeze for later. You may even put them in a zip lock bag and keep them that way.
