3 Uses for a Pasta Roller in Cake Designing

If you were to ask me what my favorite caking tool is, I would answer the KitchenAid pasta roller attachment. Apart from the KitchenAid mixer, the pasta roller attachment has provided me with the most bang for my buck.

The benefits of the KitchenAid pasta roller attachment are many. I adore mine. That is, in fact, my favorite caking tool EVER! It has saved my sanity several times.

Except for rolling out enormous amounts of fondant to cover whole cake tiers, I use it for practically everything. I thought I’d share three ways I like to utilize my pasta roller for cake decorating with you.

1. Flower Petals

I like rolling out petals for my sugar flowers with my pasta roller. I can make my petals far thinner than I could by hand. The narrower your petals are, the more realistic they will seem.

2. Cupcake Toppers

The pasta roller attachment may also be used to roll out cupcake toppers. When rolling out fondant for several cupcake toppers, make sure they are all the same thickness. When using the pasta roller attachment, just set it to the desired thickness and you’re done!

3. Ruffles

I also make ruffles using my pasta roller. It’s my best buddy who asks me to bake a ruffle cake. You know what I mean if you’ve ever had to roll out gobs of fondant for ruffles. The same logic applied to the cupcake toppers.

All of your ruffles should be the same thickness. Using your pasta roller will save you a ton of time, as well as a ton of neck and back strain. If my pasta roller broke and I had to create a ruffle cake without it, I would actually just sit down and weep.

Tips for Using the Pasta Roller:

So here’s how to put it to use: Roll out the quantity of fondant or gumpaste required using your tiny rolling pin. It is not necessary to roll it extremely thin. It should be just thin enough to pass through the first setting on your attachment.

To prevent sticking, coat both sides of the spaghetti with the powdered sugar mixture. Begin with the setting below 1, which I assume is zero. Just increase the numbers as required to get the desired thickness. The secret is to sprinkle some cornstarch on top.

That is by far my most used caking tool, and it is well worth the money.

Thus, if you own a KitchenAid mixer, you must have this pasta roller.

There are hand-cranked pasta rollers (such as this one), but I haven’t tried one, so I can’t guarantee it will be as simple. I’VE SEEN OTHER COOKS USE THESE BEFORE, and it doesn’t seem to be any more difficult than using the KitchenAid attachment.
